It includes recognising and assessing an emergency, keeping people safe, assessing the casualty, seeking emergency assistance, performing CPR, using first aid equipment, communicating details and reviewing the incident.

HLTAID011 is broader. Training.gov.au describes it as providing a first aid response to a casualty across community and workplace settings. It includes the same emergency response sequence, but its assessment requirements cover a wider range of conditions and injuries. That is why HLTAID011 is the safer answer when someone asks for workplace first aid unless the requirement names a different unit.

Where HLTAID010 sits in the first aid pathway

Think of the unit ladder this way: HLTAID009 is CPR, HLTAID010 is basic emergency life support, HLTAID011 is general first aid, and HLTAID012 is first aid in an education and care setting. Each step adds context or breadth. CPR focuses tightly on cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Basic emergency life support adds more response tasks. General first aid adds wider first aid management. What HLTAID010 covers

HLTAID010 covers basic emergency life support. Its national unit details include four elements: responding to an emergency situation, applying appropriate first aid procedures, communicating incident details and reviewing the incident. Its performance evidence includes managing an unconscious breathing casualty, managing an unconscious non-breathing adult and infant with CPR, using an AED training device, and managing selected urgent conditions such as anaphylaxis, asthma, bleeding, choking, shock and stroke.

That is a serious and practical unit, but it is not the same breadth as HLTAID011. It may suit a requirement that names basic emergency life support. It should not be assumed to satisfy a requirement that names Provide First Aid.

Are they equivalent?

No. They are separate current units with different titles and scopes. Training.gov.au also records both as updates from older unit codes: HLTAID010 supersedes HLTAID002 and HLTAID011 supersedes HLTAID003, with the old-to-new mapping recorded as not equivalent. That is another reason not to treat older names or nearby codes as interchangeable.

If you hold an older statement of attainment, ask the organisation requesting first aid evidence what it will accept. For new training, enrol in the exact current unit required.

Which one should you choose?

Choose HLTAID011 if you need a general workplace or community first aid certificate, if your job ad says Provide First Aid, or if your course or placement names HLTAID011. Choose HLTAID010 only where the requirement specifically asks for basic emergency life support or where an employer confirms it is enough. If you only need CPR currency, compare HLTAID009 instead.
