Transferring to Another Provider

If you hold a student visa and want to move to a different education provider, there are
rules about when you can do that and what we must consider. This page explains them plainly.

Version 2.0 · Effective 1 July 2026 · Review 1 July 2027

Who this applies to: international students on a student visa who want to
transfer from ALIT to another registered provider, or who are applying to ALIT while enrolled elsewhere.

The first six months

Under the National Code 2018, you generally cannot transfer out of your principal course during your
first six months of it. A new provider cannot knowingly enrol you during that period unless one of the
permitted circumstances applies — for example:

  • Your current provider has ceased to deliver the course, or has had a sanction imposed that prevents you
    continuing
  • A government sponsor supports the change in writing
  • Your current provider grants you a release (a “letter of release”)
  • Exceptional circumstances apply, as recognised under the National Code

After six months of your principal course, you do not need a release from ALIT to transfer.

What we consider when you ask for a release

We assess each request on its merits. These are the factors we weigh, so you know what to address in your
application:

  • Your reasons, and any supporting evidence you provide
  • Whether the new course better suits your goals than the one you are enrolled in
  • Your progress and welfare at ALIT — how you are actually going
  • Whether support has been offered and tried — if the issue is something we could help with,
we would rather help than lose you
  • Whether the request is genuinely your own — we look at this because students are sometimes
pressured by third parties to move

Outstanding fees are not a reason for us to refuse your release. If you owe fees we will discuss
them with you and agree how they will be settled, but your transfer request is decided on its merits.

How to request a release

  1. Submit the Transfer Request form — with your reasons and supporting evidence, to
    admission@alit.edu.au.
  2. We confirm whether the restriction applies — that is, whether you are still within the first
six months of your principal course.
  3. We assess your request against the factors above.
  4. You receive a written decision within 10 working days, with the reasons for it.
  5. If your request is refused — you are given written reasons and told about your right to
    appeal.

Supporting evidence that helps

  • A valid written offer of enrolment from the receiving provider
  • Evidence of the circumstances you are relying on — for example medical documentation, family
circumstances, or evidence relating to your course or career direction
  • Anything showing you have sought support at ALIT for the issue behind the request

If we refuse

A refusal is not final. You have 20 working days to appeal the decision using our internal
complaints and appeals process, and your enrolment continues while that appeal is under way. If you are
still not satisfied after our internal process, you may take the matter to the Overseas Students
Ombudsman
— a free, independent service.

Your visa

Transferring providers affects your student visa. ALIT can explain our process, but only the Department of
Home Affairs can advise on your visa. Contact them at
homeaffairs.gov.au before making a decision. If a transfer is
approved, we update PRISMS and your Confirmation of Enrolment as required.

Common questions

Can I transfer to another provider in my first six months?

Generally no. Under the National Code 2018 you cannot transfer out of your principal course during your first six months unless a permitted circumstance applies — for example your provider ceases delivery, a government sponsor supports it, or ALIT grants you a release. After six months you do not need a release.

What does ALIT consider when deciding a transfer request?

Your reasons and supporting evidence, whether the new course better suits your goals, your progress and welfare at ALIT, whether support has been offered and tried, and whether the request is genuinely your own. Outstanding fees are not a reason to refuse a release.

What if ALIT refuses my transfer request?

You have 20 working days to appeal, at no cost, and your enrolment continues while the appeal is under way. If you are still not satisfied you may contact the Overseas Students Ombudsman, which is free and independent.
