Course Progress and Attendance
Your student visa requires you to make satisfactory progress in your course. ALIT
monitors this every study period — not to catch you out, but so we can help before a problem becomes a
reportable one.
Who this applies to: international students enrolled in a CRICOS course at
ALIT. Domestic students are supported under
Student support, but are not subject to the reporting
obligations described here.
What satisfactory progress means
You are making satisfactory progress if you remain on track to complete your course
within the registered duration shown on your Confirmation of Enrolment.
How we work it out. At the end of each study period we compare the units you have completed
against the units scheduled for that point in your course. If the shortfall means the remaining units cannot
realistically be completed by the end date shown on your CoE, your progress is unsatisfactory and we begin the
support process. It is a comparison you can check yourself at any time — ask us and we will show you
where you sit.
Attendance
Attendance requirements depend on your course.
| Course type | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Courses with mandatory hours — where a licensing authority or the training product sets them, such as licensed security training and first aid | All mandatory hours and practical activities must be completed, as well as satisfactory course progress. Missing a session means arranging a catch-up before you can be assessed. |
| All other courses | We monitor course progress, not attendance percentages. You are expected to attend and follow your training plan — students who stop attending stop progressing, and that is what triggers our support process. |

If you are at risk — what happens
- We identify it early — through assessment outcomes, attendance where it applies to your
course, engagement and welfare indicators. These are the same early-warning triggers used for every ALIT
student. - Student Services contacts you — to understand what is actually going on. Health, work,
money, family, language, isolation: these are common and none of them make you a problem student. - We agree an intervention strategy — a documented Individual Support Plan setting out the
support you will receive, any adjusted timeline, and dates to review it. See
Student support. - We record how it goes — the support provided and your response are documented, and the plan
is reviewed on the agreed dates.
Engage with this step. Intervention is where most progress problems get solved. Students who
respond to the first contact very rarely reach the reporting stage.
If progress does not improve
Where, after intervention, you have breached the progress or attendance requirements that apply to your
course, the following process applies — and every step of it protects your right to be heard:
- Intention to Report notice — you receive a written notice setting out the breach, our
decision, and your right to appeal. - 20 working days to appeal — you may appeal internally under
Complaints and appeals, at no cost, with a
support person if you wish. - Your enrolment continues during the appeal — while an internal or external appeal is under
way, except in the limited circumstances the National Code permits. - Reporting — only if you do not appeal, or the appeal is unsuccessful, is the matter reported
through PRISMS as the National Code requires.
What reporting means for your visa
Being reported for unsatisfactory course progress or attendance can affect your student visa. ALIT cannot
give you visa advice — contact the Department of Home Affairs at
homeaffairs.gov.au. What we can do is support you well before
it reaches that point, which is the entire purpose of this process.
Common questions
What counts as satisfactory course progress at ALIT?
You are making satisfactory progress if you remain on track to complete your course within the registered duration shown on your Confirmation of Enrolment. At the end of each study period ALIT compares units completed against units scheduled; if the shortfall means the remaining units cannot realistically be completed by your CoE end date, progress is unsatisfactory.
Does ALIT require a minimum attendance percentage?
It depends on your course. Where a licensing authority or the training product sets mandatory hours — for example licensed security training and first aid — all mandatory hours and practical activities must be completed. All other courses are monitored on course progress rather than attendance percentages.
What happens before ALIT reports unsatisfactory progress?
ALIT contacts you, agrees a documented Individual Support Plan and records how it goes. Only if progress does not improve does ALIT issue an Intention to Report notice, which gives you 20 working days to appeal. Your enrolment continues during an appeal.
