WHILE YOU STUDY
Work Placement
Some ALIT courses include work placement — time spent in a real workplace, doing
real work, assessed against the same standards as everything else in your course. This page explains what to
expect and what you need to have ready.
Does your course include placement? Your course page and your Student
Agreement say so, and how many hours are required. Placement hours are set by the training package for each
qualification — for example Certificate III in Individual Support requires 120 hours. Do not
assume the same figure applies to a different course.
Before your placement starts
Placement cannot begin until these are complete and on file. Start them early — some take weeks.
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|---|
| Police check | A current national police check. Most host organisations will not accept a student without one. |
| Sector screening | Where the sector requires it — for example NDIS worker screening or aged-care screening. Your trainer will tell you which applies. |
| Immunisation and first aid | Where the host or the unit requires it. |
| Working with Children Check | Where your placement involves people under 18. |
| Pre-Placement Clearance Checklist | Completed and signed, confirming everything above is current and filed. |
If a clearance expires part-way through your placement, tell us immediately — you cannot continue on
an expired clearance.
How your placement is set up
- We assess the host — ALIT checks that the workplace can actually give you the experience
the units require, that your supervisor holds the right qualifications and experience, and that they are
not supervising more students than they can properly oversee. - A written Host Agreement is signed — recording the host, the supervisor, the units your
placement addresses, insurance, and who is responsible for what in work health and safety. Placement does
not proceed without it. - Your clearances are confirmed and filed before your start date.
- You are briefed on what you will be doing, what is being assessed, and who to contact if
something goes wrong.
During your placement
- You keep a Placement Evidence Pack — daily logs and task records, with your workplace
supervisor signing off each session. This is your evidence, and an incomplete pack means an incomplete
unit. - A qualified ALIT assessor assesses you against the unit performance criteria. Where your
assessment requires direct workplace observation, an ALIT assessor observes you on site; where the
evidence requirements are met another way, your assessor uses your evidence pack together with
third-party reports from your supervisor. Your Training and Assessment Strategy sets out which applies to
your units, and your assessor tells you before your placement starts. - Your employer completes an attestation at the end, linked to those same performance criteria.
- ALIT monitors your attendance, progress and wellbeing throughout, and steps in if there is a
problem.
Safety and insurance
Before your placement begins, a written Host Agreement records the work health and safety
responsibilities of ALIT, the host and you, and the insurance arrangements that apply to the placement. ALIT
confirms those arrangements are in place before you start. If you want to know exactly what cover applies to
your placement, ask us and we will tell you in writing.
You are a student, not free labour. Placement exists so you can develop and demonstrate the
skills in your units. If you are being used to fill a roster gap, asked to work unsupervised beyond your
competence, or asked to do something unsafe, stop and contact ALIT on
(03) 9917 5018. We will address the matter with the host and will not leave you to manage it alone.
If a placement cannot be arranged, or falls through
ALIT monitors host quality and maintains a range of hosts precisely so this is manageable. If a host
withdraws, cannot meet the requirements, or the placement is not working out:
- Tell us as soon as you know. Do not wait to see if it resolves itself.
- ALIT works with you to source an alternative host. We review each host’s performance at least
annually and replace those that cannot reliably meet requirements. - Your timeline is adjusted if needed, and any effect on your course duration is explained to you in
writing. For international students, we assess the effect on your CoE and PRISMS reporting. - Hours you have completed and evidenced are recorded, and count towards your requirement where the
units and the activities are the same.
Your responsibilities
- Attend as scheduled and follow the host’s reasonable directions and workplace policies.
- Behave professionally — the Student Code of
Conduct applies on placement exactly as it does on campus. - Keep your evidence pack current and get supervisor sign-off at the time, not weeks later.
- Respect confidentiality — you may see personal information about clients or patients, and it stays
in the workplace. - Report any incident, injury or concern to both your supervisor and ALIT.
If something goes wrong
Raise it with your ALIT assessor or Student Services first. If it is not resolved, use our
Complaints and Appeals process — free, and
without any effect on your placement or your assessment.
Common questions
What do I need before starting work placement?
A current national police check, any sector screening such as NDIS or aged care, immunisation and first aid where required, a Working with Children Check where the placement involves people under 18, and a completed Pre-Placement Clearance Checklist. Placement cannot begin until these are on file.
How many hours of work placement do ALIT courses require?
It depends on the qualification, and the requirement is set by the training package. Certificate III in Individual Support requires 120 hours. Your course page and Student Agreement state the requirement for your course.
What if my work placement falls through?
Tell ALIT as soon as you know. ALIT works with you to source an alternative host, adjusts your timeline if needed and explains any effect on your course duration in writing. Hours you have completed and evidenced are recorded and count towards your requirement where the units and activities are the same.
