Who Needs to Complete HLTAID012 in Australia?

Anyone working in early childhood education and care in Australia needs HLTAID012 — childcare educators, kindergarten staff, outside school hours care (OSHC) workers and family day care educators. It is the first aid qualification built for settings where the casualties are most often infants and children, and it satisfies the first aid, anaphylaxis and emergency asthma requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations in a single course.

The regulation behind the requirement

Centre-based education and care services must ensure that at least one person holding a current approved first aid qualification, at least one holding current approved anaphylaxis management training, and at least one holding current approved emergency asthma management training is in attendance at all times and immediately available in an emergency. These requirements come from Regulation 136 of the Education and Care Services National Regulations, and the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) maintains the list of approved qualifications. Family day care is stricter still: because the educator cares for children alone in their own home, that educator must personally hold all three credentials. Who needs to complete HLTAID012

Early childhood educators and assistants

Educators in long day care, sessional kindergarten and integrated children’s services are the core group. Many services set a condition of employment that all educators hold a current HLTAID012, not just one nominated staff member, so the certificate directly affects employability.

Family day care educators

A family day care educator works alone with children, so the National Regulations require that educator to personally hold current first aid, anaphylaxis and asthma management training. HLTAID012 is the efficient way to meet all three at once. Service leaders are frequently the designated first aider of last resort, and holding HLTAID012 supports a service’s compliance posture and its quality rating under the National Quality Standard, particularly Quality Area 2 — Children’s Health and Safety.

Casual, relief and agency staff

Services and staffing agencies prefer casual educators who can step straight into a first aid role on any shift. Holding HLTAID012 materially improves your casual booking prospects in early childhood.

School teachers and support staff
