WHILE YOU STUDY

Student Support and Reasonable Adjustment

Studying while working, parenting, or settling into a new country is hard. Support at
ALIT is not a formality — ask for it early and it works better.

Student Services:
info@alit.edu.au ·

You do not need a reason or a diagnosis to start a conversation.

What is available

  • Academic support — extra help with course content, assessment preparation, study skills and
    time management.
  • Language, literacy and numeracy support — if reading, writing, maths or digital skills are
making the course harder than it should be.
  • Wellbeing support — a confidential conversation, and help finding professional services
when that is what you need.
  • Reasonable adjustment — practical changes to how you learn and are assessed, see below.
  • Additional support for international students — settling in, understanding your visa
    obligations, and finding local services.
  • Interpreting — if English is not your first language we can help you arrange an
interpreter through TIS National on 131 450.

Your language, literacy and numeracy check

Every student completes a language, literacy and numeracy assessment before or at enrolment, aligned to
the Australian Core Skills Framework. It is not a pass-or-fail examination. It helps ALIT determine
whether the course is suitable for you and identify any support you may need before your enrolment is
confirmed. Where your assessed level is below what the qualification requires, we put a support plan in place,
or advise you honestly about a more suitable option.

Requesting a reasonable adjustment

A reasonable adjustment changes how you access training and assessment, not what you have to
demonstrate. Common examples include extra time, assessment in a separate space, alternative formats,
assistive technology, a note-taker, or adjusted scheduling.

  1. Tell us — speak to your trainer or Student Services, or submit the Reasonable Adjustment
Request form. You can do this at any point, not only at enrolment.
  2. We discuss what would actually help — you know your circumstances better than we do.
  3. A documented decision — Student Services and the Academic Manager apply the Reasonable
Adjustment Decision Framework, record the adjustment, and confirm the competency standard is maintained.
  4. It is applied and reviewed — the adjustment is recorded in your assessment record so every
trainer and assessor applies it consistently.

You are not required to disclose a diagnosis to the whole organisation. Information you share is handled
under our Privacy Policy.

If you start falling behind

We do not wait for you to fail. ALIT monitors defined early-warning signs — assessment outcomes,
attendance where it applies to your course, progress, your LLN results and welfare indicators — and if
any of them suggest you are at risk, Student Services will contact you.

What follows is a conversation, not a warning letter. Together you identify what is actually causing the
problem and agree an Individual Support Plan recording the support measures, any adjusted timelines,
and dates to review how it is going. The plan is reviewed on those dates and either closed because things are
back on track, or adjusted.

If you are an international student, these same triggers and supports apply before any question of
course-progress reporting arises. Early support is the entire point — see
Course progress and
attendance
.

Does it work?

ALIT records support use and outcomes and evaluates whether the support actually improved results —
not merely whether it was offered. Where it is not working, the approach changes.

Common questions

What support does ALIT offer students?

Academic support, language literacy and numeracy support, wellbeing support and referral, reasonable adjustment, and additional support for international students. Student Services is available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on (03) 9917 5018 or info@alit.edu.au.

Can I fail ALIT’s language, literacy and numeracy assessment?

No. The LLN assessment is not a pass-or-fail examination. It helps ALIT determine whether the course is suitable for you and identify any support you may need before your enrolment is confirmed.

What happens if I start falling behind at ALIT?

Student Services contacts you and works out what is actually causing the problem, then agrees an Individual Support Plan recording the support measures, any adjusted timelines and review dates. This happens before any question of reporting arises.
