Tell ALIT as soon as you safely can, even if the incident has already been dealt with by emergency
services. We cannot support you through something we do not know about.

What counts as a critical incident

A traumatic event, or the threat of one, that causes extreme stress, fear or injury. It includes serious
injury or illness, death, a missing person, serious crime, natural disaster, and serious mental-health events.
It is not limited to events that happen on ALIT premises — if something serious happens to you
elsewhere and it affects your study or wellbeing, tell us.

What ALIT does

  1. Immediate safety first — the staff member who becomes aware ensures immediate safety and
    calls emergency services if needed.
  2. The response plan is activated — our Compliance Manager classifies the incident and assigns
roles under ALIT’s Critical Incident Response Plan.
  3. You are supported — counselling, practical assistance, and contact with your next of kin
where appropriate. For international students, we help you contact family overseas.
  4. Required notifications are made — within the relevant timeframes, including to the relevant
Commonwealth authority for international students where required.
  5. We review what happened — every incident is recorded and reviewed so our response
    improves.

Support afterwards

The effects of a serious incident do not end when the emergency does. ALIT can arrange counselling and
practical support, adjust your study timeline, and connect you with external services.

If you are worried about someone else

Tell us. You do not need to be certain, and you will not get anyone in trouble by raising a genuine
concern. Contact Student Services or any staff member.
