WHILE YOU STUDY

Student Code of Conduct

These are the standards of behaviour we expect from every ALIT student, and the process
we follow if they are not met. It exists so that everyone — students, staff and the public — can
learn and work safely.

Version 2.1 · Last Review 1 Sep 2026 · Review 1 July 2027

Who and where: all enrolled students, domestic and international, in every
mode of study. It applies on our campus, at any premises used for training or assessment including workplaces
and shared or neighbouring tenancies, during online learning, and in any communication connected with your
study.

What we expect of you

  • Treat trainers, staff, other students and members of the public with respect and courtesy.
  • Behave honestly, safely and lawfully.
  • Attend and participate in all required parts of your course, including any mandatory hours that apply
    under licensing requirements.
  • Follow reasonable directions from trainers and staff.
  • Stay in scheduled training and seek approval before leaving where attendance is required.
  • Respect ALIT’s property and that of third parties, including neighbouring tenancies in shared
    buildings.
  • Communicate respectfully, in person and online.
  • Maintain professional presentation consistent with your course and industry.

What counts as a breach

Misconduct

  • Disruptive behaviour that prevents training being delivered
  • Disrespectful, abusive or discriminatory language or behaviour toward any person
  • Repeated or unauthorised absence from required training
  • Failure to follow reasonable directions
  • Dishonesty — academic dishonesty is dealt with under
    Academic integrity and AI

Serious misconduct

  • Threatening, intimidating or harassing any person, including staff
  • Attempting to use improper influence over staff, ALIT or a regulator to obtain an advantage or to
    pressure a person
  • Violence or threats of violence, or behaviour that endangers safety
  • Unauthorised attempts to access or interfere with property or premises, including neighbouring
    tenancies
  • Unlawful conduct on ALIT or associated premises
  • Retaliation against a person for raising a concern or complaint

These lists are illustrative, not exhaustive.

Your health and wellbeing

If you are experiencing health or personal difficulties, seek support early — see
Student support. Where health issues affect your ability to
participate safely or meet course requirements, we will discuss options with you, which may include deferral
or leave as supportive measures. Where there is a genuine safety concern, we may ask for medical clearance
before you continue, and may take interim protective measures.

How breaches are handled — your rights

  • You are told clearly what is alleged.
  • You get a reasonable opportunity to respond before any decision is made.
  • Decisions are based on the balance of available evidence, not assumption.
  • The matter is handled by someone unbiased who is not personally involved as a witness.
  • You may bring a support person to any meeting.
  • Outcomes are proportionate to the conduct.
  • Records are kept in line with our Privacy Policy.

Process and possible outcomes

StageWhat it involves
Informal resolution or counsellingFor minor matters
First written warningStates the conduct, the required standard, and the consequences of continuing
Final written warningWhere conduct continues or is more serious
Suspension from trainingPending review, where appropriate
Cancellation of enrolmentFor serious misconduct, or repeated breaches after warning

These stages are not necessarily sequential — serious misconduct may warrant suspension or
cancellation without a prior warning, subject always to your right to respond first.

Timeframes

  • You receive written notice of any meeting and the matters to be discussed, with reasonable advance
    notice.
  • You may respond in writing within 5 working days of a warning or decision.
  • A decision following a process is ordinarily provided in writing within 10 working days.

Appeals

You may appeal any disciplinary decision under our
Complaints and Appeals process. The appeal is
considered by someone not involved in the original decision. If you are an international student, your
enrolment status during an appeal is managed in accordance with the National Code 2018.

International (CRICOS) students

If you hold a student visa, our management of conduct, attendance, suspension and cancellation is also
governed by the National Code 2018 and the ESOS Act 2000. This includes your opportunity to access the
complaints and appeals process before we report a change to your enrolment — except where your wellbeing
or the safety of others requires earlier action — and reporting through PRISMS where required. See
Deferral, suspension and
cancellation
.

Courses linked to licensing

Some courses lead to an external licence — for example security licensing, which in Victoria is
administered by Victoria Police (Licensing and Regulation Division). For these courses, mandatory
attendance, participation and conduct standards may also affect your eligibility for a licence. You are
responsible for meeting the licensing authority’s requirements, and ALIT may be required to provide
information to that authority in accordance with its obligations.

Common questions

What happens if I breach ALIT’s Student Code of Conduct?

Outcomes range from informal resolution or counselling, through a first and then final written warning, to suspension from training or cancellation of enrolment. Serious misconduct may warrant suspension or cancellation without prior warning, subject always to your right to respond first.

Can I respond before ALIT makes a disciplinary decision?

Yes. You are told clearly what is alleged and given a reasonable opportunity to respond before any decision is made. You may bring a support person to any meeting, and you may respond in writing within 5 working days. A decision is ordinarily provided within 10 working days.
