CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations can support entry into guarding, crowd control, patrol and retail security work in the Northern Territory. You also need the appropriate licence or lawful authorisation, work rights and any employer-specific requirements. Completing the course does not guarantee employment.

Security guard and static guard roles

A static guard generally works at one location, such as a building entrance or commercial site. Duties may include checking access, observing activity, assisting visitors and reporting incidents. General security guard roles can also include patrols within a site.

Communication, access control and risk assessment are useful foundations for these roles. Ask an employer about the actual duties and induction arrangements, rather than assuming every guard position involves the same work.

Crowd controller roles

Crowd controllers may screen entry, monitor behaviour and respond to conflict at venues or events. The work calls for calm communication, awareness of risk and a clear understanding of lawful procedures. CPP20218 covers crowd behaviour, intoxicated persons and removal procedures.

For crowd-control duties, you need the applicable crowd controller or combined licence. Do not assume that a security officer licence alone covers crowd control. Confirm the licence category and any conditions before accepting work.

Mobile patrol roles

Patrol work may involve moving between sites, checking premises and responding according to instructions when something is wrong. Employers may require a driver licence, driving experience, site-specific training and confidence working with limited supervision. These requirements depend on the position and are not automatically satisfied by completing Certificate II.

Retail and loss prevention roles

Retail security can involve observing activity, protecting stock, assisting staff and recording incidents. Some loss prevention roles call for previous experience or additional employer training. Read the selection criteria carefully and make sure you understand the limits of your authority.

How to prepare a stronger job application

• List your qualification and accurately state your licence status and category. If an application is pending, say so.
• Explain relevant customer service, communication and reporting experience, including experience gained outside security.
• State your availability and travel range honestly. Check transport arrangements for early, late or remote shifts.
• Ask about induction, supervision, equipment, employment type and the duties you will perform.

Pay and working conditions

Pay depends on the applicable award or registered agreement, classification, employment type and roster. The Security Services Industry Award covers many employees of security businesses, but it does not automatically cover every person with a security job title. Check coverage and current rates with the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Before accepting a role, ask for the pay rate, casual loading where applicable, penalty rates, allowances and expected hours in writing. A single advertised hourly figure may not explain all your entitlements.

Further study after gaining your licence

Certificate III in Security Operations (CPP31318) is a possible further-study option for licensed security officers. Consider it in relation to your duties, experience and career goals. It is discussed here as a pathway, not as an ALIT course offer or a guarantee of promotion.
