After completing CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations, you apply separately to Licensing NT for the security licence appropriate to your work. You must meet the licensing requirements and supply the required evidence. ALIT delivers and assesses training; it does not issue security licences or guarantee approval.
Choose the licence that matches your duties
- Security officer: for work such as patrolling or guarding another person’s property.
- Crowd controller: for relevant duties such as monitoring behaviour, screening entry and removing people at venues or functions.
- Combined security officer and crowd controller: for work covering both categories.
Choose based on the duties you intend to perform. A job title alone does not establish the correct licence category. Supplying security services as a business also raises separate security firm licensing requirements.
Complete the required training
NT Government guidance lists all 14 units of CPP20218, including First Aid, for the current Certificate II training pathway. Keep your qualification and record of results available for your application. Check the government’s current training guidance if you have older qualifications or previous licensing history.
Prepare and submit your application
- Check the current application instructions and choose the correct individual licence category.
- Arrange the required criminal history check for the purpose of a security licence. The NT instructions specify how to identify that purpose through SAFE NT; a check obtained for another purpose may not be accepted.
- Arrange the required police fingerprint check and gather the identity documents and training evidence specified in the current application.
- Apply through Licensing Online, or follow the paper application process and submit the documents and fee through a Territory Business Centre.
- Respond to any request for further information. Wait until you have the required licence or other applicable lawful authorisation before performing licensed duties.

Criminal history and licensing eligibility
Criminal-history and other licensing checks are matters for Licensing NT. They are separate from ALIT’s course admission process. Being accepted into training does not establish that you are eligible for a licence. If you have concerns about your history, contact Licensing NT before committing to training so you can make an informed decision.
Working while you finish training
A provisional licence may be an option while completing training. It requires a separate application and approval, and any conditions must be followed. Enrolment alone does not allow you to begin security work. Ask Licensing NT whether this option applies to your circumstances.
Interstate licences and ongoing obligations
Holding an interstate qualification is different from holding an interstate licence. Existing interstate licensees may have a mutual recognition or automatic mutual recognition pathway, subject to eligibility and the required process. Check this before applying as a new entrant.
Once licensed, check the expiry date, conditions and current renewal instructions. Keep your details and any required training current. Licence fees and government checks are additional to ALIT’s training fee.
Frequently asked questions
Does ALIT issue the licence?
No. ALIT provides training and assessment. Licensing NT handles licence applications and decisions.
Can I work as soon as I receive my certificate?
A certificate alone does not authorise licensed security work. Obtain the appropriate licence or confirm an applicable lawful recognition pathway first.
Will a criminal record stop me enrolling at ALIT?
ALIT does not use criminal-history clearance as a course entry requirement. Licence eligibility is assessed separately by Licensing NT, and you should raise any concerns with that authority.
