Why we recommend refreshing CPR every 12 months
Unlike most first aid units, CPR is widely treated as a 12-month qualification. The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends — and most Australian workplaces, including schools, childcare, aged care, healthcare and fitness, require — an annual CPR refresh. Your CPR refresh date is calculated from the day you completed your last CPR unit (HLTAID009, HLTAID011, HLTAID012 or HLTAID014).
Published evidence suggests CPR skills decline within three to six months of training, even for healthcare professionals. ARC guidelines are also reviewed and updated over time. An annual refresher means:

How often do I need to refresh CPR?
The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends — and most Australian workplaces require — CPR to be refreshed every 12 months. The 12 months is counted from the date your last CPR unit was completed.
Is HLTAID009 the same as a CPR refresher?
Yes. HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is the unit used as the annual CPR refresher for anyone holding HLTAID011, HLTAID012 or HLTAID014. Completing HLTAID009 resets your 12-month CPR currency.
Do I need any previous first aid experience?
No. HLTAID009 has no prerequisites. While it is most often used as an annual refresher, it is also suitable for anyone learning CPR for the first time.
How long is my CPR certificate valid?
There is no legislated expiry. The Australian Resuscitation Council and most Australian workplaces treat HLTAID009 as a 12-month qualification, so you will be required to complete the unit again to maintain currency after 12 months.
Do I need to bring anything?
Bring valid photo ID, your USI, and comfortable clothing suitable for floor-based CPR practice. Water is provided. The workshop runs 2 hours.
What if I am pregnant, have a back injury or need reasonable adjustments?
CPR practice involves kneeling on the floor and applying compressions on a manikin. Reasonable adjustments are made under the Disability Standards for Education 2005. Please contact us before enrolment so we can discuss your needs.
