HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting is the nationally recognised first aid qualification for people working with children — from early learning centres and family day care to primary and secondary schools, OSHC programs and family support services. HLTAID012 is on the ACECQA-approved first aid qualifications list and is one of the qualifications that meets the first aid requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations. You will learn to manage emergencies involving infants, children and adults, including CPR, AED operation, anaphylaxis, asthma, choking, seizures and serious bleeding — all in scenarios contextualised to education and care settings.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal prerequisites for HLTAID012. To be assessed as competent you must:

  • Be at least 14 years of age (under-18s require parental/guardian consent)
  • Have language, literacy and numeracy skills broadly equivalent to ACSF Level 2 — able to read and follow ARC guidelines in English
  • Be physically able to perform two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin placed on the floor (reasonable adjustments available — contact us before enrolment)
  • Hold a Unique Student Identifier (USI) — free at usi.gov.au
  • Present valid photo ID on the day of training
  • Complete the online pre-learning module before attending the face-to-face session

How the Course Is Delivered

HLTAID012 is delivered as a blended program. You complete the theory and pre-reading online in your own time before attending a single 7-hour practical workshop at our West Melbourne campus. The practical day focuses on hands-on skills — CPR on adult, child and infant manikins, AED use, anaphylaxis auto-injector practice, asthma management, and three scenario-based simulated first aid incidents contextualised to education and care.

How You Are Assessed

To be assessed as competent in HLTAID012 you must successfully complete all of the following:

  • Online knowledge assessment (multiple choice and short answer)
  • Practical demonstration of CPR on adult, child and infant manikins
  • Demonstrated operation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), including delivery of at least one simulated shock using an AED trainer
  • Three scenario-based simulated first aid incidents in an education and care context (adult, child and infant)
  • Verbal and written incident report

All assessment is conducted by a qualified trainer and assessor in line with the assessment conditions of HLTAID012 and current ARC guidelines.

Certification & Renewal

On successful completion you will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting, issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework. Certificates are typically issued within 5 business days.

Recommended refresher schedule

While there is no legislated expiry, the ARC and the education and care sector recommend or require:

  • CPR component refreshed every 12 months (HLTAID009 or equivalent)
  • Full HLTAID012 unit refreshed every 3 years

Is HLTAID012 approved by ACECQA?

HLTAID012 is on the ACECQA-approved first aid qualifications list. It is one of several first aid qualifications that meet the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations.

Yes. You must complete the online pre-learning module and knowledge assessment before attending the face-to-face session. You will receive access details after enrolment.

There is no legislated expiry. The ARC and the education and care sector recommend refreshing the CPR component every 12 months and the full unit every 3 years, and most employers in the sector require this.

Bring valid photo ID, your USI, comfortable clothing suitable for floor-based CPR practice, a water bottle, and lunch (or be ready to buy lunch nearby).

Your trainer will identify gaps and you may attempt one complimentary reassessment. Any additional reassessments are charged at the rate set out in our Student Handbook.
